Healing and Magic
I am wary of the term magic, as part of the Ovate Course I will be learning
about magic. I feel that perhaps I shouldn't get involved! Is it my catholic
heritage seeping into my thoughts? Maybe! I know every day I see magical
things in nature, in small kindnesses given and received. In the way a Reiki
treatment can refresh and restore balance and equilibrium
The term magic encompasses so many aspects of life. The word magic is used quite casually every day for example: it was a magical sunset, it worked like magic. My wedding was a magical day. The dictionary defines magic as:
... the art by use of spells to invoke supernatural power to influence
When I send distance healing I set the intention within a technique, or ritual and send Reiki for the highest good for that request. I don't feel I use a spell to send Reiki.
When I think about life I see it as fundamentally magic, the magic of synchronicity
brings together people, and opportunities. In my blog I have described how
through the synchronicity of events, people, and places I entered onto my
In Druidry the word alchemy is used with magic and again I hesitate to move forward on this path. The dictionary definition for Alchemy is:
….. an early, unscientific form of chemistry that sought to change base metals into gold and discover a life-prolonging elixir, a universal cure for disease.
it is also defined as:
a power supposedly like alchemy, especially of enchantment or
Was Usui Sensei an alchemist? He wrote that Reiki is: The miraculous medicine of all diseases. Reiki is also described as: A Universal Energy.
During the time I have been learning Reiki my life has been transformed and I
have felt the magic of change in my spiritual and personal development. It was
while studying the bardic course that I began to write a blog and develop
stories for the Hazel Tree Story Tellers.
My life has changed and I have begun new projects activities prompted by Reiki and Druidry so why do I still feel doubtful about studying magic? I think this subject needs more exploration from me about influences on my thinking. Am I stumbling over the semantics of words?
I am grateful for the synchronicity of meetings and events which have made so much of my life magical.
With Reiki blessings
The Pentagram symbol
upright solar energy
This is a symbol that I have been wary about. I feel that it is because I did not understand its meaning. I came to associated the symbol as being submerged in evil, perhaps because I have seen so many Hammer Horror films and absorbed too much horror fiction!
Reading John Greers book Druid Magic Handbook gave me insight into different meanings of the pentagram's spiritual aspect..
"a pentagram with a single point upright (as above) serves as a symbol of good and the reverse pentagram an emblem of evil"
Yin and Yang
The description of the pentagram above is simplistic Which Greer points out himself. however, In Taoist philosophy concepts of good/bad are disregarded as are other moral judgments, in preference for the idea of balance as is represented in the symbol Yin and Yang.
In this symbol heavenly and earth energy are balanced and the male and female energy are in harmony. They are not opposing forces but complementary energy. Everything has
both yin and yang aspects as light cannot exist without darkness and the opposite is true, the energy of one or the other may ebb or flow over time but each will strive to return to balance and harmony.
The pentagram is still not a symbol I would use or wear but I am gradually beginning to clear away all my misconceptions I have about it.
I am comfortable with the Yin and Yang symbol which I am familiar with from my use of the I Ching and from Tai Chi.
I have a lot of pondering still to do.
